Keeping Street Dogs Safer: Ongoing Efforts

By Jeyanthy Suntharam | Programme Manager

Save a Life continues its work to protect Sri Lanka's street dogs, building on two preventive measures we introduced this year: a street awareness billboard campaign encouraging safer driving around areas where stray dogs are commonly found, and the distribution of reflective collars to improve their visibility to drivers at night.

Since installing the billboard and distributing the first batch of collars, we have been working to extend the reflective collar initiative to additional high-risk roads and neighborhoods identified by our volunteers, focused on the busy road zones where street dogs face the greatest danger.

Financial constraints remain our biggest obstacle to scaling this work further. Larger-scale rescue, medical care, and rehoming activities are currently on hold while we prioritize the lower-cost, high-impact preventive measures that our current resources allow, such as collar distribution and public awareness.

We are actively seeking additional funding and partnerships that would allow us to resume full rescue and medical care operations alongside our prevention work, so that we can support street dogs that are already injured or in need of veterinary attention, not just prevent future accidents.

We are sincerely grateful to GlobalGiving and our supporters for standing behind this work. Even modest, steady initiatives like ours make a real difference for Sri Lanka's street dogs, and we hope to grow this program further with your continued support.
