20 girls are now safe & happy in our Negros Center

By Laurence Ligier | Foundress

For the past 8 months, thanks to the support of our donors and the commitment of the CAMELEON teams, lot of realizations have been done despite the pandemic. Let's keep moving forward!

  • 20 girl survivors of sexual abuse are protected and supported in the new Negros center

Six girls from Panay and fourteen girls from the different cities and municipalities of Negros Occidental were admitted in the Negros Center between May to September 2019.

Basic needs of the girls are being continuously provided such as lodging, food, clothing and medication. The girls were enrolled in the nearest public schools by the housemothers and are provided with their school needs. To assure their safety, a service car is available to bring them back & forth from school.

The construction of a private access road to the center has been completed this summer thanks to the help fo one sponsor. The security of the girls is completely assured with a presence of a security guard.

The girls undergo personal healing and therapeutic intervention such like counselling, dialogue with psychologists and psychiatrists, sessions on values development and social skills.

"I'm thankful that I'm here in CAMELEON because I have changed. I learned so much, especially how to do household chores such as washing the dishes, doing the laundry and tidying up my things. I even learned how to cook. I'm also much more studious here. At home, I was lazy and I had to repeat a grade at school. But I'm grateful for my parents that they sent me here because they knew CAMELEON would change me. I am now determined to finish my studies, find a job and help my family."  Pearl Joy

Some of the girls are also prepared for their social and family reintegration. Technical skills training, such as computer literacy, cooking and sewing, were provided to the girls to help them become self-sustaining and independent outside the center.

A Parents Effectiveness Seminar was held in the center. 18 family members (parents & siblings of the girls) participated. The topic of "Effective Discipline" was discussed with the parents and families of the girls, which aims to help them improve their parental skills in managing their children with a balance of love, care and discipline. The girls also gave a song and dance performance to welcome their family members.

  • Sending-Off Ceremony

The Negros Center hosted its first Sending-Off Ceremony this summer. Five girls were officially turned over from the In-House to the After-Care Program. The five girls will continue their journey of healing outside the center and back to their families or guardians in the community, wherever is safest for them. 5 new girls were welcomed in the center and because of the increase of sexual abuse cases during Covid-19 pandemic, CAMELEON will take in another 5 additional girls.

  • First celebration of Summer Camp

This first celebration Annual Summer Camp took place in Negros center. The theme was "Peace, Love, Unity and Summer Camp in the time of COVID-19".

The two-day Summer Camp had tested the girls' knowledge, athletic skills and innate talents through: Spelling Bee, Mathenik, Laro ng Lahi (Traditional Filipino Games), Volleyball, Badminton, Vocal Solo, Pop Dance, Declamation and Extemporaneous Speaking Contest.

  • The girls and staff dealing with the Covid-19 pandemic

To protect the girls from the dramatic consequences of the Covid-19 pandemic, CAMELEON had to take several decisions. Indeed, the virus has been actively spreading in the region and to prevent the danger in the center, the girls have been quarantined with the staff since March 2020.

Safety protocols such as wearing of masks, checking of body temperature and social distancing are implemented for the visitors.

Song written by the girls during Pandemic

Last September distance-Learning classes began. Girls were taught by hired tutors within the safety of the center. They were grouped according to their academic capacities and age to ensure the girls receive appropriate lessons. The girls can continue to study and learn their academic lessons within the safe center.
