BREAKING BARRIERS TO EDUCATION FOR RURAL GIRLS

By Othieno Gerald | Project Leader

This quarter highlighted the continuing challenges faced by girls living in underserved rural communities. Menstrual health needs remain largely unmet, forcing many students to stay home during their periods and miss critical learning opportunities.

Poverty remains one of the primary causes of absenteeism among adolescent girls. Without access to sanitary products, many rely on unsafe alternatives that can lead to infections, discomfort, and embarrassment. Reduced support for youth-focused health programs has further limited access to information and guidance for vulnerable adolescents.

Through this project, girls received menstrual hygiene supplies and participated in educational sessions covering reproductive health, personal hygiene, and self-confidence. The program also engaged teachers and parents to create supportive environments that encourage girls to remain in school.

One beneficiary explained that she no longer worries about missing exams during her menstrual cycle because she now has the resources needed to manage her health safely. Stories like hers demonstrate how targeted support can transform educational outcomes.

By addressing both practical and educational barriers, the project is helping girls stay focused on learning rather than worrying about challenges they cannot control.

Thank you for making this work possible. Your partnership is helping vulnerable girls overcome obstacles, remain in school, and build the foundation for healthier and more successful futures.
