Dear our friends,

I would like to express my gratitude for your generosity and your strong support of both DWN and our partnership with GlobalGiving. I am pleased to share with you the progress of our Safe Stoves for Darfur Refugee Mothers project in the Touloum refugee camp in Chad.

As of February 10th, ingredients are being collected to produce over 200 more stoves for the project, thanks to your contributions from our End-of-the-Year Campaign. One of our board members will be traveling to Chad by the end of February and will follow up with the staff in the refugee camp to ensure the production and distribution of the new stoves to the refugee families.

Your continued support is necessary to produce more safe stoves before May 2015.  June starts the rainy season in Chad.  With no completely waterproof shelters in the refugee camp, safe stove production will not be a possibility until the rainy season passes.

However, we will be able to help the refugees plant at least two trees either near their home or around camp.  We are more optimistic than ever to continue this project as we recently had four more volunteers join our network to help in different areas based on their education, background and experience, which will grow the diversity within our group.

We are working deligntly to design  cell phones project to work side by side with our safe stoves to protect women and girls who still collecting firewood to cook on traditional stoves to feed their kids. The goal of the cell phones project is for women and girls to call from the forest if there is danger.

One suggestion for a new project was to provide mobile phones to the women and girls in the refugee camp for security. So, we integrated this project with the safe stoves project. The DWN designed “ Mobile Phones for Saving Lives in Conflict Zones.” One of the goals of this project is to provide mobile phones to those who are still using traditional stoves to cook for their children and families.  Traditional stoves require the women and girls to collect firewood from the forest, sometimes walking miles from home.

We thank you for walking step-by-step with us throughout our project.  Our ultimate goal is to provide every last refugee mother with a safe stove to insure her safety and help her provide for her family.
