In Nigeria, many children from poor families are forced to work instead of going to school. Some spend long hours hawking on busy streets, working as domestic servants, carrying heavy loads, or doing dangerous jobs to survive. These children face abuse, exploitation, accidents, and a future without education. This project will help protect vulnerable children from child labour through free schooling, learning materials, family support, and community awareness about children's rights.
Millions of Nigerian children are denied education because poverty forces them into child labour. According to the ILO and UNICEF's 2022 Nigeria Child Labour Survey, 24.7 million children aged 5-17 were engaged in child labour, including 14.3 million in hazardous work. Many children hawk goods on dangerous roads, work as domestic servants or carry heavy loads instead of attending school. They face abuse, exploitation, injuries, and lost opportunities, trapping families in generations of poverty.
This project will help children escape child labour and return to school through scholarships, school fees, uniforms, textbooks, and learning materials. We will work with parents, schools, and community leaders to identify children at risk, support their enrolment, and help families keep them in school. The project will also provide child protection education, raise awareness about the dangers of child labour, and connect vulnerable families with available social support services.
Every child rescued from child labour and returned to school has a better chance of escaping poverty, abuse, and exploitation. Through continued education, children can gain knowledge, develop skills, and pursue careers that were once beyond their reach. The project will help reduce school dropout rates, discourage child labour, and change harmful attitudes that keep children working instead of learning. In the long term, more children can grow into educated and independent adults.
