Making Space for Seabirds to Return

By Caroline Jeranek | Development Manager

EPIC is working to restore two important seabird nesting sites in St. Vincent and the Grenadines: Battowia and the Pillories. These islands are home to nesting seabirds such as Red-footed Boobies, Brown Boobies, and Laughing Gulls. They are important nesting sites where birds return year after year to lay eggs and raise their chicks.

Over time, invasive goats have damaged the islands by eating the plants that seabirds rely on to house their nests, obtain nesting materials, and provide shelter. When there are fewer plants, it becomes harder for birds to successfully raise their young. This matters because seabird populations have declined around the world. Many seabirds raise only one chick each year, so every successful nest is important.

To help address the problem, EPIC is working with the Forestry Department of St. Vincent and the Grenadines and other partners to remove invasive goats from the islands. Licensed professionals are carrying out this work during April, May, and June 2026, in coordination with local authorities and established safety procedures.

"By restoring these islands, we are helping give seabirds a better chance to raise their chicks and return to these nesting sites in the future," said Tabitha Stadler, Executive Director of EPIC.

EPIC and its partners are also monitoring the islands before and after the restoration work. This will help us to understand how the birds and plants respond as the habitat recovers.

Once the goats are removed, native plants can begin to grow back. Over time, this will create better nesting areas for seabirds and help support healthier populations in the future.

Thank you for supporting this work. We look forward to sharing updates as the islands recover and seabird habitat improves.
