Together, We Can Do This!

By Megan Hitchcock | Project Director

You can help our girls rise above poverty
You can help our girls rise above poverty

We cannot thank you enough—all of you wonderful individuals who have contributed to Kenya Keys through our GlobalGiving Girl Fund Campaign. Thanks to you, we have raised just over $7,000 and are currently in 6th place in the campaign ranking. This is overwhelming to us, and we are so grateful to each one of you.

The money raised in this campaign will have a significant impact on our work with girls in rural Kenya. With it, we will be able to provide reusable sanitary kits to over 450 girls, or provide school fees to keep 18 girls in school for a full year. Or we could fund all the operating expenses to host seven girl empowerment conferences—collectively impacting over 3,500 girls. Or we could provide emergency supplies and funds to 140 girls in need of rescue from abusive situations and the threat of early marriage. As impressive as those numbers are, it is even more powerful to look at how this funding impacts a girl at a personal level, so we want you hear Jacqueline’s story.

Jacqueline was born in the extremely poor village of Chigombero, Kenya. Unfortunately, Jacqueline’s father does not believe in educating girls and was determined to sell 14 year-old Jacqueline into marriage. Jacqueline and her mother were horrified at the idea. Her mother was frequently beaten by the father, and she desperately wanted a better life for Jacqueline. Jacqueline’s mother fled with her children and went to live with an aunt in another village. Through funding from Kenya Keys, Jacqueline was able to receive financial assistance so she could attend school in her new village, where she thrived and qualified to continue her education. All of this is possible because of the funding we receive through campaigns like the Girl Fund.

The funds Jacqueline received are relatively small—about $375 per year to help with school and living expenses. But the impact could not be greater. This money saved her life and transformed her future. She will never be the same, and her siblings, her future children, and everyone within her influence will have better lives because she is staying in school. On behalf of the countless girls whose lives will be transformed, we want to personally thank each of you for making this kind of rescue possible.

We have come so far in this campaign, and we are so close to being awarded a place in GlobalGiving’s Girl Fund—with guaranteed, ongoing funding for our girls. We are hoping you will go the extra mile with us, and share our project page with your friends and family and/or on your social media accounts. If each of you brings in just one more donor, we will be awarded these extra funds. We know you believe in what we do, and we are beyond grateful for all you’ve done to support us. Will you help us reach our goal so we can continue to protect and empower girls like Jacqueline?
