Life Before Support
We have teams at Tanzania’s busy bus terminal looking out for and protecting children at risk – which is where our staff met Ruban* during their outreach work.
When we met Ruban, he was just 14 years old. He was living alone on the streets, surviving on his own resourcefulness. After his mother left when he was very young, Ruban was raised by his father and older brother. But with his father struggling with alcohol addiction and unable to provide care, Ruban and his brother were forced onto the streets.
Ruban earned small amounts of money for food by washing cars and collecting plastic waste. At night, he slept under the verandas of local shops, exposed and vulnerable.
Engaging Ruban Through Outreach
Despite his difficult circumstances, Ruban showed a deep desire to change his situation. Our team of street workers began weekly sessions with him — offering life skills education, emotional support, and basic child protection guidance.
These sessions helped Ruban develop confidence and trust. He learned about self-care, how to stay safe from abuse, and how to manage his emotions. Through one-on-one engagement, he expressed a strong desire to return to education and learn a trade that would allow him to support himself in the future.
A New Start Through Education
In April 2024, Ruban was enrolled onto a three-year vocational programme. His first year focuses on literacy, numeracy, and exploring introductory skills in areas like tailoring, mechanics, farming, and carpentry.
Though he initially dreamed of becoming a mechanic, Ruban has since discovered a passion for plumbing. He has chosen to specialise in this trade for the second and third years of his programme.
When he completes his training, he’ll be supported with job placement opportunities or linked with partner organisations to help him find secure employment.
Looking Forward
Ruban's story is one of resilience and self-belief. Despite the absence of family support and a past marked by hardship, he has taken his future into his own hands.
With your support, children like Ruban can trade uncertainty for opportunity — and begin writing a different story. This transformation wouldn’t have been possible without your generosity. Thank you.
