This project will promote reading and improve literacy by reaching children across 3 states in Nigeria. It will establish at least 2 reading corners each in 6 schools and/or communities across 3 states, while also equipping existing libraries with essential resources to foster a lasting reading culture.
Reading habits among Nigerian children are declining due to poor library access, limited reading time, and a lack of books. Only 35% of public lower secondary schools have libraries, compared to 63% in private schools, while in Kwara State, fewer than 10% have them. Existing libraries are often poorly stocked and understaffed, making them ineffective. Schools allocate little time for independent reading, with out-of-school children facing even greater challenges, widening the illiteracy gap.
United Way Nigeria is expanding access to books and promoting reading culture. Volunteers dedicate up to 48 hours monthly, but more resources are needed to scale up. The project will establish reading corners and libraries across 3 states with books and digital tools. Schools will introduce dedicated reading hours, and volunteers, community members and teachers will be trained. Out-of-school children will benefit from literacy programs and mobile reading initiatives, ensuring inclusive learning.
This project aims to create a lasting literacy movement, improving education outcomes for Nigerian children. We foster critical thinking and lifelong learning by establishing well-equipped reading spaces and ensuring access to books. Higher literacy rates will enhance academic performance, employability, and poverty reduction. Out-of-school children will gain essential literacy skills, bridging the education gap.
