November 1st, 2020, would have been Edward Said’s 85th birthday if he hadn't passed away after his battle with cancer, and I’d personally like to think he would have been proud of the Edward Said Public Library in Gaza.
Ever since the Edward Said Public Library has been established by the amazing youth running the Youth Vision Society in Gaza, and it’s been an amazing source of positivity, learning, and outlet for the children - as well as adults - in the Gaza Strip. The library offers a variety of programs, book clubs and discussions, story-telling, sit and talk with authors, educational activities for the kids .. etc. But after the first community-transmitted covid-19 hit the strip back in August, lots of schools, institutions, shops, and organizations had to shut its doors down and enter a lockdown, including the library.
But since now we all have to deal with the virus while taking the necessary precautions and measures, the library has been setting a great example of so. The educators and facilitators have been making sure the children, and themselves, cleaned their hands when necessary, put on their masks at all time, and not have a room way too crowded.
The Edward Said Public Library and the work its staff and volunteers do is extremely crucial and we’re beyond happy they were able to carry out the amazing work they’re doing under the new threat of covid-19 while keeping themselves and the children safe, sound, and healthy.
