Dear donors, friends, and supporters,
We hope the beginning of a new year has started off on a lovely note! We would like to take this time to extend a heartfelt thank you for your ongoing support and donations and to update you on the status of our project.
Gulu Women’s Economic Development & Globalization (GWED-G) staff is working very hard and making a lot of progress! As a chapter, we are dedicated to their mission and goals. As such, we too have been hard at work to ensure we fulfill our fundraising goal. After many semesters of successful fundraising events, we set our chapter goal as $23,000. A big source of funds came from one of our most exciting events from the fall - Hilltop! Hilltop is a conference that we host, both to increase our knowledge of global health and to foster community among the other GlobeMed chapters. This year’s theme was “Elevate: International Public Health and Marginalized Communities.” Historically, these marginalized populations have been excluded from global and public health movements, so it was incredibly insightful to hear the thoughts of many academics, health professionals, and activists. Everyone there, organizers, speakers, students from other schools, and so many more would agree that this was an incredibly well-put event.
With Hilltop now residing in our memories from last semester, we have upcoming events to continue support GWED-G by steadily working towards our fundraising goal. In December, we hosted a profit sharing event with a local restaurant, Junzi Kitchen. The restaurant only recently opened, so it made for an exciting event for people to both taste Junzi Kitchen’s options for the first time while at the same time supporting the mission of GWED-G. In addition to hosting another profit-sharing event with Chipotle, we will also be hosting a donut sale on Columbia’s campus.
In addition, we are excited to once again be planning a gala event this semester. In the past, this has been an enjoyable night, and all proceeds go to GWED-G. With regards to the advocacy side of our chapter, we look forward to gearing our efforts towards political advocacy this semester and becoming more active advocates within the NYC community. In addition, we will be diligently planning a tabling event
for World Health Day to inspire others with the great work being done by GWED-G! On a smaller scale, we will also continue to inspire chapter members by creating great ghU sessions during general body meetings to inform everyone of news in public and global health.
As mentioned, some of our members will travel to Gulu, Uganda during the summer. Though it doesn’t feel too long ago since the past summer’s group returned, this year’s group has already started preparations for their summer trip. The GROW coordinator, Chandana, is incredibly excited to be leading the trip and will be in communication with Pam, GWED-G's renowned founder and director, to facilitate a great and productive trip.
We remain fully committed and dedicated to our partnership with GWED-G through our initiates both on- and off-campus. With your support, GWED-G can continue to reach vulnerable populations in Northern Uganda. We cannot thank you enough for all the change you enable through your generous donations.
Please feel free to contact us with any questions or comments, and continue to follow our activities on our websites and social media platforms!
Best,
