In Turku, Laitila and Uusikaupunki, the Fingerroos Foundation has implemented a project through its Löytävä vanhustyöoutreach work to support older adults facing substance use issues. For this work, the foundation used the Pilke model, developed by the Blue Ribbon Association in Finland.
Pilke is a low-threshold peer group model for older adults who struggle with harmful alcohol or substance use. The groups offer a safe and welcoming space where participants can meet others, share experiences, and receive support without shame or judgement. For many, the group becomes much more than a weekly activity – it becomes a place of belonging.
What makes Pilke powerful is the combination of professional facilitation and peer support. The groups have a clear structure, but they remain flexible and responsive to the real needs of participants. Discussions, shared activities and regular meetings help older adults strengthen everyday life skills, reduce isolation and rebuild confidence.
The Fingerroos Foundation has brought the model into practice with warmth and professionalism. Its facilitators create trust, guide the group process and make sure each participant is seen and heard. This is especially important for older people whose lives may be marked by loneliness, exclusion or difficult life experiences.
Pilke shows that well-designed group support can be both cost-effective and deeply human. It helps people reconnect with others, find dignity, and take steps towards recovery and a healthier life.
The Fingerroos Foundation also trains Pilke facilitators, helping the model reach more communities and more older adults in need.
Thank you for supporting work that helps older adults find connection, hope and a life free from alcohol and other drugs!
