Youth at De La Salle North Catholic High School took on one of their most challenging tasks--convincing their fellow students to be healthier. The youth, all 9th graders, created posters that reflected their ideas and passions about health. The top 10 posters were featured in a school-wide vote recently.
Ninth-grade health teacher Dave, helped guide his students in how to best express their ideas, based on what they learned in class with MIKE Program over the last semester. MIKE hosted weekly sessions with volunteer mentors to engage with students in a variety of health topics.
The students gained knowledge, skills and confidence that helped them put together messages that would resonate with their fellow students. More than 55 9th graders submitted posters for the competition.
Besides the student vote at school, MIKE organized a judges' panel of healthcare professionals who based their vote on strength of message, visual clarity and overall emphasis on health issues. The ballots are being counted as we go to press, so we'll be sure to update you with the winning posters in our next report.
It is supporters like you who make these exciting opportunities possible. The poster contest helps youth develop communication skills, build their academic portfolios and most importantly, inspire others to be healthy.
