We have 3 learners who are currently benefitting from funds raised through GlobalGiving; 2 adults and one high school student. One of our adult learners in 2019 had to stop schooling due to chronic inflammation called lepra reaction, a complication of leprosy even after treatment is completed. We hope he will be well enough to resume schooling this coming schoolyear.
Marco and Flor, two treated leprosy patients who have been enrolled in the Alternative Learning System (ALS), will be graduating from the high school program of Sta. Isabel College in Manila this month. They have decided not to pursue higher studies. But as a result of the ALS, both learners are more equipped to perform leadership roles in their organization, the Hansen's Club. Marco is the current President of this patient support group. Aside from ALS, Marco and Flor have been participants of a Leadership Formation training and Public speaking training under the Philippine Leprosy Mission during the past year.
Our Grade 10 high school student and her family are happy that she is able to finish another year of school by March 2020. This coming schoolyear, she will be in senior high school.
There are two prospective applicants for college. We are reviewing their applications. We are also encouraging persons affected by leprosy to take up vocational skills training courses to increase their chances of employment or small businesses. We hope to add 10 more recipients of the educational assistance program for the year 2020. Here's to another fruitful year!
