We Can Win the Fight Against Malaria

Malaria bed nets will keep families healthy

Why do malaria cases continue to rise?

In 2024, malaria cases climbed to 282 million globally, up from 273 million the previous year. Global deaths rose to 610,000. Young children and African countries are especially vulnerable as the WHO African region accounts for 94% of all cases and 95% of deaths globally. Also, 75% of all malaria deaths in Africa occur in children under the age of 5.

Some of the reasons for this situation are:

Emerging biological threats, such as anti-malarial drug resistance, could be a huge setback to malaria prevention efforts.
Resource gap: In 2024, international and domestic malaria funding fell short by US $5.4 billion. This addittional amount is needed every year to reach 2025 global targets.
Climate change has resulted in unpredictable new windows for malaria transmission which has disrupted local health infrastructure.

However, there is cause to celebrate as:

A total of 47 countries are now certified malaria-free by WHO. Furthermore, 37 countries reported fewer than 1,000 cases, proving elimination is possible even in historically high-burden settings.
Malaria vaccine rollout: By late 2025, 24 countries had successfully integrated the WHO-recommended malaria vaccines into their routine childhood immunization programs. These vaccines have driven a 22% reduction in hospitalizations for severe malaria among eligible children.
Innovations: Seasonal Malaria Chemoprevention (SMC) expanded dramatically, reaching 54 million children across 20 countries (with Nigeria alone protecting 28.5 million). And the use of next-generation, dual-active ingredient insecticide-treated bed nets (ITNs) has provided superior protection against resistant mosquitoes.

According to the WHO, eradicating malaria is entirely possible. However, success depends on countries taking aggressive steps toward malaria control and global agencies increasing funds for malaria prevention and control.

What Are We Doing to Prevent Malaria in Zambia?

This year, we will be providing 4,000 long lasting insecticide treated nets to families vulnerable to malaria in rural and urban areas in Zambia. This will keep 13,000-15,000 children or 8,000 adults malaria free as each net can sleep up to four young children or two adults. Currently, we are raising funds to provide an additional 4,000 nets. Please donate generously so we can keep thousands of families safe from malaria. A direct impact of families being malaria free is higher school attendance and performance, and income stability as adults miss fewer days from work.
