The holiday season is upon us and things are busy here at Fair Haven! We are in full Christmas mode. Every year, our agency collaborates with community partners to bring Christmas to our younger clients. We are amazed by the generosity of this community and are grateful to everyone who donated. As for our teen support group has been thriving over the past few months. We have welcomed a new male member who has been coming consistently as well as a few other new members. The kids in this group are the definition of resilience.
We are trying out some new activities this cohort which includes taking some excerpts from the book “Your New Playlist” which is written by the teen daughters of the author, Jon Acuff. This book presents an interesting approach to overthinking through the lens of a teenager. Group members have gotten a lot out of these readings because it provides them with relatable examples of how overthinking can alter your self-esteem and over-all perspective of the world. We have also explored topics such as identifying unhealthy vs. healthy relationships, red flags for human trafficking, defining abuse, and grief.
We have recently completed “The Broken Bowl Project” which is a very special activity to do with teens. Many victims of sexual abuse feel that they are broken beyond repair. This activity highlights that it is possible to put the pieces of yourself back together and that it may not be perfect but it will be whole again. This project included breaking a bowl to represent the survivor. The group members took the pieces of the bowl and painted them with colors that represent how they feel or felt about hard times in their lives. We then put the pieces back together then inside the bowl, they wrote positive traits about themselves and/or things that are important to them. Members would point out that some pieces didn’t fit perfectly together or that there was a chip in their bowl. This was a representation of how people can change because of a traumatic event but that they can be whole again.
We are able to do amazing activities like this due to supporters like you! We are so grateful for your ongoing support.
