The 2023 PA Cohort is in full swing

By Julissa Villatoro | Programs Assistant

Dear generous donors,

This is Julissa, Programs Assistant at Justice for My Sister, bringing the latest update on this year’s PA Certification program.

The 2023 PA Cohort is in full swing, just recently entering Phase Two of the program, attending the first in-person Production Training Day. These training days allow the cohort to apply all that they learned in the online portion of the program onto an actual production set. The first day was dedicated to assembling and breaking down two camera packages and lighting gear, guided by two instructors who gave a comprehensive breakdown of all the pieces of gear and equipment. Everyone in the cohort got the chance to equip the cameras with different lenses and filters, and film some camera tests to see how it all comes together. Fellows have glowing feedback on how much they were able to engage in cinematography and lighting, one participant claiming how they learned more in the space than in their film school courses.

Last year on this training day, we were able to bring on one instructor for about 10 members of the cohort. This year, we were able to bring two instructors to teach 18 participants. We are so thrilled to be able to welcome more members into Phase Two, which in no doubt is in part due to the growing number of supporters since last year. We hope to receive that continued support, and we hope to see it grow as we work to give the most engaging and comprehensive training to emerging filmmakers of color from our communities.

Together, we build a community of filmmakers and artists that tells them they belong in film and TV. Please continue to cheer them on!
