Mama Dragons started with the intent to show our love and committment to the wellbeing of our LGBTQ+ children. In this moment, it feels even more critical for us to be back at PRIDE celebrations across the country to stand in solidarity with the LGBTQ+ community, support those who need a connection to a mother who 'gets it' and share the love and support of Mama Dragons. 2025 has seen unprecedented attacks on the LGBTQ+ community. There has never been a more critical time to show support and solidarity than now. Unfortunately, as federal grants have become harder to get and sponsors have been pulling back on supporting LGBTQ+ causes and events, being out and visible as supporters of our LGBTQ+ children requires us to be more creative and intentional in providing opportunities to show the steadfast solidarity and PRIDE we have for our queer kids.
Mama Dragons is partnering with our Mamas from all over the country to participate in Pride celebrations by marching in parades and celebrating our LGBTQ+ children at booths at local events. Mama Dragons is committed to being visible allies in our support of the LGBTQ+ community, but also to financially and institutionally support public Pride celebrations in a time when they need it so much. Seeing a supportive parent who actively supports LGBTQ+ people has a profound effect.
Suicide is the second leading cause of death among youth ages 10 to 24, with LGBTQ+ youth at a significantly increased risk. LGBTQ+ youth are more than four times as likely to attempt suicide than their peers (The Trevor Project, 2022). However, a single supportive adult in the life of a young LGBTQ+ person can reduce suicide risk by 40%. Participating in PRIDE will help us reach more moms who need support, education and empowerment to be more outspoken and visible in their support.
