Closing a strong year and opening new challenges!

By Andrea Infante | Coordinator of Education. Todo Mejora Chile

The Close of a Strong Year:

In 2015, children in Chile continued to be deprived of quality health care and education.  To address this ongoing problem, TODO MEJORA worked closely with the public and private actors and:

  • Directly responded to the needs of more than 540 children, 80% of whom had suicidal ideations by providing immediate help in its online “Safe Hour” and by supervising cases in with the 9 mental health centres that are part of our Centre Network.
  • Worked hand-in-hand local schools that now have 9 “Adult Allies,” professional who trained to address the needs 300 LGBTI children directly.
  • Build the capacity of more than 2000 health professionals in all regions of the country.
  • Reached millions of Chilean families through a national TV show about LGBTI families.
  • Played key role in the development of the National Law to Guarantee the Rights of Children and Adolescents.

The Challenges Continues:

The year 2016 has already shown TODO MEJORA that demand has INCREASED. At the same time that TODO MEJORA has helped many families, by putting the issues on the table, the struggles and the consequences of discrimination have become more visible.

Schools are in URGENT need of help and teacher training to prevent LGBTIphobic bullying, and the need to promote safe spaces for children has increased.  We know this by the high demand for our help and assistance.

And, research continues to be ESSENTIAL to develop evidence based recommendations for public policy and programmes.

To ensure the rights and protection of LGBTI children are support, we need YOUR Help.

We are currently developing the 2016 plan, but we already know that we must:

  • Train more teachers and psychologists to protect students and generate more Safe Spaces to promote rights and diversity.
  • Extend our Safe Hour to address the mental health needs of children and families.
  • Hire an education specialist to develop and innovate new interventions for schools.
  • Build our fund development capacity to expand our awareness building campaigns.
  • Develop research and hire research specialists to gather new knowledge and have better data on the life experiences of LGBTI children.

Thank you for your ongoing support!

With your help and belief in TODO MEJORA, we can continue to promote well-being and battle discrimination against children and adolescents in Chile!

Until the next report!
