Who doesn’t love a good road trip? You pile into the family car, pick your favourite seat in the back, start up the ipod and you’re on your way to a new destination. Our team recently went out into the field, but their road trip had a different focus than simple rest and relaxation. Over the past few months the entire SE Asian region has been experiencing record heat and drought. Despite the heat and unfavourable conditions our team held trainings in the Kampong Cham province, which is just over 100 kilometers north east of Phnom Penh. Here they held a training for 53 leaders from the local communities.
Collaboration and networking is the core of what we do at Chab Dai and it influences all of our projects. How can anyone truly expect to reach all the communities and spread helpful information to stop exploitation before it starts? The job is not impossible. The good news is there are leaders in every community who want to help in keeping their friends and family safe. These leaders include local government officers, pastors, police officers, or influential membors of the community. They need support in protecting their communities and Chab Dai provides that support.
Our Safe Communities projects gives the support that leaders crave in their communities. We don’t just provide training, we provide financial support and materials to use in educating their communities. This last training in Kampong Cham we provided 23 large printed flip charts that leaders can keep and use. We distributed 8800 help cards that are in the local language and printed with key information on who to contact if exploitation or trafficking is occurring.
We have a small team, but they are the core resource in training community leaders. After training with our Chab Dai team, the 23 leaders then trained and shared information to 990 people! This is the advantage to networked collaboration. At Chab Dai we can focus on what information is important right now and needed to be shared. We then inform our leaders in communities and they relay that information to their community.
There are still challenges that need to be overcome. Some leaders have very busy schedules and are unable to attend the trainings. The heat this season also made it difficult to train and learn. Your contributions assist our Safe Communities project in working through these difficulties. They focus hard on equipping leaders with the necessary tools to be effective in keeping their communities safe.
