The American Institute for Cancer Research states that cervical cancer is the fourth most commonly occurring cancer in women and the eight most frequent overall. Remote Area Medical – RAM® is again gearing up to prevent and treat cervical cancer in Guyana. Vicki Gregg, (RAM Clinic Manager), Dr. Jordann Loehr (OB/GYN), and Jacqui Doran (RN) will lead a team of providers on a two-week trip that beginning in late October that will extend into November. According to the World Bank, tropical forests cover more than 80 percent of Guyana. This makes access to healthcare a constant challenge.
RAM continues to be undeterred and remains committed to improving health outcomes in remote locations and the Guyana Women’s Health Program is a prime example of the organization rising to the challenge at hand. The team of traveling healthcare providers is still being finalized, but RAM hopes to expand its services. Historically RAM has conducted pelvic exams, biopsies, and Pap tests. The Amerindian population has long been amongst the poorest individuals in this nation. Basic healthcare continues to be scarce, but your support of this program ensures RAM’s efforts to prevent and treat cervical cancer in Guyana can continue.
