Talobeeg Foundation has continued implementing the Prevent a Child from Going Blind in Somalia project by increasing awareness among families, schools and communities about children’s eye health and the importance of early detection.
The project team designed and printed awareness flyers containing practical information for parents, caregivers and teachers. The messages explained common warning signs of eye and vision problems in children, including frequent eye rubbing, squinting, difficulty reading, sitting too close to the classroom board, headaches, red or painful eyes, and unusual eye movements. Families were encouraged to seek professional eye care promptly rather than waiting until a child’s condition becomes severe.
Working with school communities, the team distributed the flyers directly to 380 families. These direct interactions allowed families to receive the information personally and strengthened the role of schools in promoting children’s eye health.
To reach the wider community, an additional 500 awareness flyers were displayed on walls and public notice points in community facilities, schools and streets. This extended the campaign beyond the families reached through direct distribution and made important eye-health information visible to parents, caregivers, teachers and other community members.
This activity is an important step toward preventing avoidable childhood vision loss. Children may not recognize or communicate that they are experiencing difficulty seeing. Parents and teachers therefore play an essential role in identifying warning signs and helping children access examination and treatment early.
In the next phase, the project will continue reinforcing eye-health awareness and connecting children who may have eye or vision problems with appropriate screening, referral and treatment services as resources become available.
