End of Year Situation Report

By Yvette Judge | Project Leader

Season’s Greetings to you and yours. We thank you for your interest and support of this project even through the multitude of challenges presented by Ebola. This virus has impacted the region’s healthcare system, the economic system, and so many other arenas. The SEGUE Team has felt the effect of the strained healthcare system which, understandably, focuses much of the limited resources on services related to the Ebola virus. For the past few years, one of the key members of our logistics team in Liberia experienced health issues that recently affected his kidneys. We are incredibly saddened to share that he succumbed to his illness in November. We miss him dearly.

We continue to evaluate the public health and safety environment impacting project implementation within the next 3 to 6 months. Earlier this month the World Health Organization (WHO) reported a “…recent cluster of Ebola cases in Liberia was the result of the re-emergence of Ebola virus that had persisted in a previously infected individual. Although the probability of such re-emergence events is low, the risk of further transmission following a re-emergence underscores the importance of implementing a comprehensive package of services for survivors that includes the testing of appropriate bodily fluids for the presence of Ebola virus RNA”. In the interim, we are focused and committed to securing additional, much needed funding to purchase as many solar units as possible. Your continued support and sponsorship is much appreciated and will help to provide access to sustainable lighting and power –a critical element to social and economic recovery within the country.
