The Ebola outbreak in West Africa continues to impede progress on the Powering Homes and Empowering 100 Women in Liberia Project. Although the Ebola outbreak has not ceased in West Africa, in recent weeks transmission rates show significant signs of slowing. At one point in 2014, Liberia experienced the fastest growing number of Ebola cases with the World Health Organization (WHO) documenting 9,602 cases (probable, confirmed, and suspected) and 4,301 deaths. After three consecutive weeks with no reported cases in the country, one new confirmed case was reported on March 20, 2015. This is a good sign.
The energy challenges this project looked to address in 2014 have increased exponentially in light of the negative impact the Ebola outbreak is having on Liberia's economy. The SEGUE team continues to engage international donors and local entrepreneurs to build potential public-private partnerships to advance this important project. At this point it remains a public health risk to travel and operate in rural Liberia where Ebola has taken its toll. SEGUE staff will continue to monitor developments in Liberia for notification as to when we may resume operations.
SEGUE remains committed to providing access to sustainable lighting and power to Liberia’s rural population.
