Dear Friends of Atzin and Tlamacazapa,

We've painsakingly added up the numbers -- checking them twice -- summarizing program activities implemented by Atzin during 2018. The Atzin staff (based in Cuernavaca) were present in Tlamacazapa on 45 days in 2018, (including 38 Saturdays). As usual, the administrative, logistic, accounting and training activites took place in the Atzin House in Cuernavaca, while Atzin promotors, all local women, carried out the day to day activities for each program in Tlamacazapa.

During 2018 Atzin focused on five programs: 1) Tihueliske Community Education with its four components (Early Childhood Stimulation; Education of Children; Tutoring; Literacy for Women & Youth). 2 Special Needs & Nutrition. 3) Dental and oral health. 4) Environment:Adoption of ecological stoves by 300 families. 5) Health & healing: safe motherhood. Of course, for each program there is a multitude of details and follow-up to be done and reported on; these support activities are essential to each program success but much of the time, almost invisible to the occasional visitor! In fact, the type and amount of administrative and support work that takes place in the Atzin office is a real eye-opener for the promotors too, and we make every effort to rotate different promotors into the office for exposure to that aspect of program development.

The promotor team in Tlama was comprised of 22 women (9 Education Promotors; 3 Nutrition Promotors; 2 Dental Promotors; 2 Midwifery Promotors; 2-3 Sewing Promotors; 3 Investigation Promotors working on ecological stoves).

Here are a few highlights from 2018:

Special Needs: Children and adults who are homebound and receive monthly home visits: 19
Children and adults with chronic conditions receiving vitaminsand medicines: 30
Children with disabilities attending Tihueslike Education program: 6
People with special needs who received a gift (shoes or clothes) and dental attention: 55

Dental and Oral Health: Number of clinical days with dentist attending: 68
Total # of patients: 862
Breakdown by gender: 582 fem; 280 masc.
Average # of patients per day: 12.6

Tihueliske Early Childhood Stimulation: Total number who regularly participated (by end of academic year July 2018): 36 (51%) (22 girls; 14 boys)

Total # who passed to kindergarten                  13
Total # who passed to primary school               15
Total # who passed to Tihueliske Children        3
Total # who did not enter any school                 5

A complete report on all Atzin programs - by the numbers - is available on the Atzin website. To have a look, go to www.atzin.org. Kindly remember that this report is only "by the numbers," basically counting attendance and classes. The other factors such as quality of promotor time and attention, training and supervision of promotors, perceptions of learners with subsequent program adjustments, administration and accounting are all just as important, can be really time-consuming and are not reflected with just numbers.

As always, we are grateful for your ongoing support - only with that generosity can we make everything happen!

Sincerely,
