Positive steps to prove what's possible

By Lesley Lowden-Smith | Trust Income Manager

Cancer can be an incredibly isolating experience for a young person.

Time away from school, college, work and friendship groups can leave teenagers and young adults feeling disconnected from the people and lives they knew before diagnosis. Even when treatment ends, many young people tell us that they continue to feel isolated from their peers, who often struggle to understand what they have been through.

That is why our work remains so important.

Over the past year, Teens Unite has continued creating opportunities for young people living with and beyond cancer to connect with others who understand their experiences. Through social events, residential stays, creative activities, sports programmes and personal development opportunities, young people have been able to build friendships, access peer support and become part of a community where they feel understood.

One of the strongest messages we have heard from young people this year is that the greatest difference is often not the activity itself, but the people they meet through it.

Young people consistently tell us that meeting others who understand the realities of diagnosis, treatment and life beyond cancer helps them feel less alone, more confident and more positive about the future.

As one young person recently shared:

"Teens Unite has been a lifeline for me, helping me form meaningful friendships with people who get it. Knowing that I'm not alone and having friends who truly understand has been one of the most healing and uplifting parts of my journey."

This reinforces something we have always believed: connection matters. When young people find people who understand, isolation begins to reduce and confidence begins to grow.

To everyone who has supported this project, thank you. Your generosity has helped create opportunities for connection, belonging and friendship for young people affected by cancer at a time when they need it most.

More importantly, it has helped create the conditions for young people to move forward. Through the friendships they build and the support they receive, young people develop confidence, rediscover their independence and begin to see possibilities beyond cancer. Whether that means returning to education, pursuing employment, rebuilding social connections or simply feeling more optimistic about the future, these opportunities can be life-changing.

Every connection made through this project has the potential to become the first step towards a future that feels possible again.

As our services continue to evolve, we remain committed to ensuring that no young person faces cancer alone. We invite you to explore our current projects on GlobalGiving to learn more about the ways we are supporting young people living with and beyond cancer today.

Thank you for being part of this journey.
