Housing for Victims of Sexual Assault/Trafficking

At Fair Haven Rape Crisis Center, we understand that every survivor of sexual assault and trauma has a unique story, and that journey to healing requires not only emotional support and legal advocacy but also a foundation of safety and stability. With this in mind, we proudly introduce Portside Suites, our dedicated housing project designed to offer survivors of trauma a secure and supportive environment to rebuild their lives.

Portside Suites was born from a deep understanding of the barriers survivors face in their recovery process. Many individuals find themselves trapped in cycles of abuse or homelessness, with the overwhelming fear of not having a safe place to turn to. Portside Suites offers more than just shelter—it provides survivors with a space where they can heal, grow, and take back control of their lives, all while being surrounded by a community that cares. Our first draft showed four suites.  However, we are striving for ONE MORE!  

The Starfish Story: Our Guiding Philosophy

The inspiration behind Portside Suites is rooted in a powerful story—the Starfish Story—that speaks to the impact one person can make, even when the scale of the problem feels insurmountable. In the story, a man walking along the beach sees a child picking up stranded starfish and throwing them back into the ocean. The man remarks that there are so many starfish, and it’s impossible to make a difference. The child, holding another starfish, responds, “It makes a difference to this one.”

This story resonates deeply with the values of Fair Haven Rape Crisis Center and is the heart of why we launched Portside Suites. We know that we can’t solve every issue or eliminate every challenge that survivors face, but we can make a difference to the individuals who walk through our doors. For each survivor who steps into Portside Suites, we will offer more than just a roof over their head—but the chance to reclaim their dignity, their safety, and their future. For each person who finds stability, we are creating ripples of change that extend far beyond the walls of the housing facility.

A Sanctuary for Healing and Empowerment

Portside Suites will provide a safe, confidential, and supportive environment for survivors of sexual assault, intimate partner violence, and human trafficking. Located in a quiet, secure part of our community, the facility will offer a transitional housing option to meet the diverse needs of survivors. Each apartment is designed with comfort, privacy, and safety in mind, so that survivors can heal in a space that feels like home.

At Portside Suites, the focus is not only on providing shelter but on empowering survivors to build new lives. Residents will have access to a wide range of services, including case management, legal advocacy, counseling, and connections to employment and educational opportunities. This supportive environment will also includes life skills programs to help individuals navigate the challenges of rebuilding their lives after trauma, such as budgeting, job readiness, parenting support, and more.

By offering survivors a safe space to focus on their healing without the constant fear of violence or instability, Portside Suites gives them the foundation they need to reclaim their independence and thrive.

The Power of Community and Collaboration

The success of Portside Suites is rooted in collaboration—between survivors, the Fair Haven Rape Crisis Center team, and our community partners- LIKE YOU! We work closely with local housing authorities, healthcare providers, law enforcement, and social service organizations to ensure that each survivor receives the comprehensive support they need. This network of support ensures that no survivor faces their journey alone.

Additionally, the project can only be made possible through the generosity of donors, volunteers, and advocates who understand the importance of providing safe, stable housing for survivors. Just like the child in the Starfish Story, these individuals and organizations are making a difference, one person at a time. Their contributions help us provide everything from furniture and supplies to financial support and mentorship programs. 

A Long-Term Commitment to Change

As we continue to serve survivors, we are committed to expanding this project, offering ONE MORE housing unit, and increasing access to vital resources. We know that by investing in survivors today, we are building a stronger, more compassionate future for our entire community.

The Portside Suites Housing Project is a testament to the idea that even small actions can make a big difference. Every survivor who will find safety within these walls is a life that will be transformed, one step at a time. And with the continued support of our community, we will be able to help even more survivors heal, find hope, and rebuild their lives—making a lasting difference, just like the child who threw one starfish back into the sea.
