Summary

The Popular Literacy Campaign supports children from vulnerable neighborhoods in western Buenos Aires who are not literate. Due to overcrowded schools and lack of vacancies, over 1,000 children remain out of school. The campaign provides literacy support in small groups within community spaces, led by volunteer educators, strengthening learning, confidence, school readiness, and long-term educational opportunities for children and families.

Challenge

The campaign is carried out by social organizations, popular educators, and community leaders. Literacy teams are mostly volunteers, but financial resources are essential to sustain community spaces and purchase basic school materials. Activities take place in nearby community spaces, working in small groups to provide personalized support and strengthen learning.

Solution

Since 2010, the population of Cuartel V has doubled, while infrastructure and schools have not kept pace. Classrooms often exceed 40 students, affecting educational quality. The lack of school vacancies leaves many children traveling long distances or completely out of school. Attendance averages below 60%, with high absenteeism and dropout, compounded by family challenges such as multiple jobs, violence, overcrowded housing, and limited reading habits.

Long-Term Impact

The Popular Literacy Campaign provides immediate literacy support to children without access to school, working in small groups that strengthen learning and confidence. In the long term, it helps prevent dropout, improves educational trajectories, strengthens community networks, and ensures no child is left without learning to read and write.
