The Future of Us

When you feel ungrateful, look at their smiles
When you feel ungrateful, look at their smiles

“Everyday, you have the power to choose our better history — by opening your hearts and minds, by speaking up for what you know is right” - Michelle Obama

We live by choices that we made in the past, either intentional or unintentional, and we often are faced by a number of choices which make it hard to know the ‘right one'. For example, what should we eat today, what uniform suits us best tomorrow, where is the location of best tutoring, etc. This does not apply to them. They have limited choices, some which we would consider the worst. This is the story of them.

Heavy rain plus inevitable traffic slowed us down. Fortunately, we were able to watch the daily flag ceremony that followed by the National Anthem. The kids were enthusiastic and sang the National Anthem solemnly. After that, they were dismissed to go to study in class.

We met with Mr. Ignasius Maek, the Principal of Bina Pusaka Elementary School, and Ms. Heni Damayanti, the Vice Principal of Bina Pusaka Elementary School. Their hospitality conquered the gloomy atmosphere, made surroundings warmer than it should have. Then, they invited us to the library and introduced us to their four bright students. They are Sadi, Arya, Nindi, and Katrin. Sadi and Katrin are in their final grade (6th grade) and Arya and Nindi are in 4th grade. We approached them and they welcomed us with a smile and joy.

We noticed that all of them used second-hand scholastic materials. Sadi, 12 years old, is one of the brightest students in Bina Pusaka Elementary School. He came from a broken-home family, but that circumstance did not affect his performance at school. He was the first-rank student on Natural Science subject at 4th grade and he also the top performer as Striker in Bina Pusaka Futsal Club. He saves a small amount of money everyday in order to have football shoes. Because of his persistence, he finally had those shoes and won futsal competition (1st place) as Bina Pusaka Elementary School representative. He also a good basketball player and a flautist. He told us that he dreamed to be a Soldier to guard Indonesia’s sovereignty.

We need your generosity to help Sadi and other final year elementary students to achieve their dreams. They will face the National Examination next month and they need your generosity for proper scholastic materials. The problem does not stop once elementary school is over, they will need to pay for the entrance fee and most students cannot afford it. Help Sadi and other poor students by submitting your donation in the DONATE NOW box above.

We will keep updating the status of donations and the progress. Please help us spread the words by copying the URL to your social media platform. The choice we make today will determine their future. The future of us.
