Rainbow & Mamba Update
Life continues much as usual for our retired boys, and both Rainbow and Mamba are enjoying the slower pace of sanctuary life.
Unfortunately, Mamba has recently been diagnosed with Equine Cushing's Disease (also known as PPID – Pituitary Pars Intermedia Dysfunction). Cushing's is a common hormonal condition affecting older horses, caused by changes in the pituitary gland. The disease can impact a horse's metabolism and immune system, making them more prone to issues such as weight loss, muscle wastage, excessive drinking, recurrent infections, and laminitis.
Thankfully, Mamba's diagnosis was made relatively early. While there is no cure for Cushing's, many horses live happy and comfortable lives for years with appropriate treatment and monitoring. We will continue to keep a close eye on his weight, comfort, and overall health, and adjust his care as needed.
Aside from his new diagnosis, Mamba remains his usual gentle self and continues to enjoy daily attention, grooming sessions, and spending time with his friends.
Rainbow is also doing well and continues to make steady progress. He remains a sensitive soul, but his confidence grows with each passing month. Regular handling, grooming, and positive interactions are helping him become increasingly relaxed and trusting. He particularly enjoys spending time in the paddock and receiving plenty of scratches and attention from the team.
As always, we are incredibly grateful for your continued support, which allows us to provide lifelong care for horses like Rainbow and Mamba throughout their retirement.
