Restoring Forests, Protecting Communities

In North Kivu, Democratic Republic of the Congo, forests are disappearing while rural communities face the growing consequences of environmental degradation, conflict, and poverty. In the hills of Masisi, years of armed conflict, displacement, and unsustainable logging have severely damaged forest cover. Without trees and their roots to hold the soil together, steep hillsides have become increasingly vulnerable to erosion and landslides, while fertile farmland is being lost. Our project aims to plant 500,000 trees on degraded hillsides and establish managed woodlots that can provide communities with a sustainable source of timber and fuelwood, reducing pressure on remaining primary forests.

The project is currently in its preparation and resource-mobilization phase. We are identifying qualified trainers and potential learners who will participate in the community-based activities, while preparing the groundwork for implementation. The total project budget is US$55,000, and at this stage we have raised US$0 toward this goal. We are committed to being transparent with our supporters: no major field activities are being presented as completed before the necessary resources are secured. Through our collaboration with GlobalGiving, we now have an important opportunity to reach a wider community of international donors and mobilize the funding needed to move from preparation to action.

The impact of this project will extend far beyond the number of trees planted. Trees will help stabilize vulnerable slopes, reduce soil erosion and landslide risks, protect agricultural land, restore degraded ecosystems, and create greener and safer surroundings for families living in Masisi. Managed woodlots can also provide a renewable source of wood, helping reduce dependence on illegal logging in protected forests. Over time, restored forest areas can contribute to carbon sequestration, improve local environmental conditions, reconnect fragmented habitats, and create better conditions for biodiversity. Most importantly, this initiative places local communities at the center of environmental recovery, giving them an active role in protecting the land on which their livelihoods depend.

We warmly thank GlobalGiving for creating a bridge between this local initiative and a global community of people who believe that meaningful change is possible. We also extend our sincere gratitude to every donor, partner, volunteer, trainer, community leader, and supporter who has shown interest in this project. We now invite donors from around the world to stand with the communities of Masisi. A contribution of any size can help us take another step toward our goal of restoring 500,000 trees and protecting vulnerable communities from the consequences of environmental degradation. Together, we can turn a damaged landscape into a healthier, greener, and more resilient future for generations to come.
