Protecting existing forests and planting new trees are two very important ways to address climate change. These strategies simultaneously protect wildlife habitat, absorb carbon from the atmosphere, and help to stabilize regional climate patterns. Cambodia is not only a country hard hit by climate change but also by the regional climate chaos brought on by the destruction of its forests.
This is why Peace Bridges is committed to supporting the local forest communities in Cambodia. Many people who rely on the forests for their livelihoods are sacrificing time and energy to protect those very forests for the benefit of the whole country.
One such group, the Prey Lang Community Network, is going to co-host a 4-day tree planting camp this July. We will join with them by showing our solidarity, supporting the event financially, and inviting Cambodians from the city and around the country to witness their hard work.
In order to make this happen, we are trying to reach our goal of raising $10,000. That money will go to purchase thousands of saplings, compensate the local community members who will transport people, supplies, and saplings, and sponsor young Cambodians to join in to learn about the forests.
We are well on our way with over $4,000 donated so far. We are tremendously grateful for all who have contributed to our fundraiser. Your support will not only make Cambodia a greener place, but you are supporting the people who are most effected by climate change and who are doing something about it!
Next week, members of the PLCN will meet to decide the best location for hosting this event and planting saplings. Thank you for your support and stay tuned for more updates about this program.
