From Forest to Future: How Chuicutama Unites Nature, Identity, and Progress
As part of the "Living Forests, Prosperous Communities: Chuicutama in Action" project, the community has promoted a comprehensive process that merges cloud forest conservation with the cultural, organizational, and economic strengthening of the territory. This collective effort reflects a vision where nature, identity, and community well-being go hand in hand.
One of the most significant achievements has been the training of 42 citizen scientists, who have developed skills in environmental monitoring, ecological restoration, and environmental protection. Of these, 10 have established themselves as local community guides, leading sustainable tourism experiences based on a deep knowledge of the mountains, trails, and sacred sites. This process is complemented by the leadership of women who promote ancestral foods and the revival of practices like weaving, strengthening cultural identity and creating dignified livelihoods.
A key element that now provides identity and order to the territory is community signage. At the entrance, a main sign welcomes visitors with the message: "Welcome to Chuicutama, Land of Resilience and Culture – Eco Tour and Community Lodge." This point marks the beginning of an organized and conscious experience. Along the route, trails, the community center, and spaces like the traditional kitchen have been marked, allowing visitors to locate and appreciate each place that is part of the tourism offerings.
The signage serves a comprehensive purpose: it orients visitors, enhances safety, protects ecosystems by guiding tours along established routes, and, at the same time, communicates community identity and pride. Each sign not only points the way but also tells a story, connects with the territory's memory, and makes it easier for community guides to share knowledge about the biodiversity, landscapes, waterfalls, rivers, and virgin forests of Chuicutama.
Furthermore, through a community tourism consultancy, a document was systematized that outlines the territory's potential and integrates biodiversity, community memory, and ancestral knowledge as the foundation for a sustainable model.
The community center, equipped to host more than 20 people with a rainwater harvesting system and a traditional kitchen, serves as a space for meeting and exchange. From there, visitors can breathe the cool mountain air, listen to the songs of birds, and enjoy the tranquility of a living environment.
Today, Chuicutama is an example of a sustainable community, where forest conservation, the transmission of knowledge, and community organization intertwine to build a future with identity, dignity, and hope.
