Project Report | Aug 23, 2019
Educating and empowering girls

By Lama Tenzin Choeygal | CEO, C.E.D. Society and the Pink Pad Project

The Pink Pad Project goes to the heart of the problem for young women that drop-out or miss school due to the embarassement of dealing with their periods that begin in their adolescence.  Sadly, durable myths remain that women are dirtly and should be banished during the menstrail period.  Many choose to remain at home to avoid the embarassement of their period, not having a clean way to deal with the period.  It is estimated that 30 crores or 300 million women do not have access to sanitary pads.  Most of these women live in poverty where is taboo to discuss the topic of menstration.

The cost of commercial sanitary pads and their impact on the environment of non-biodegradable remain a barrier.

A solution to the problem is providing a kit with sanitary pads directly to the young girls and women, without the interference of men whom may choose not to obtain these pads due to cost, or the young women being shamed into not obtaining the pads because it brings attention to this issue.

The Pink Pad Project will produce and deliver free of charge biodegradable sanitary pads and organic packaging with butter paper.  The pink pad kit is a wholistic solution to the mentrual period as in addition to the pink pads each person receives a pain relief medication for cramps and cartoon guide for how to use and apply their sanitary pads.

The project has made much progress.  The building that will house the manufacturing facility is nearly complete.  The three-story building is nearing completion as the foundation has been laid for the three floor facility.  The final step in the physical structure is expected to be completed by December 2019.

A state of the art machine that will produce the pink pads has been purchased.  The second floor facility that will house the machine has been constructed.  The next stage will be to place the machine on the third floor.

Rooms have been created to house workers and interns that will assemble the Pink Pad Kit.
