Update on Ikata Pig Project!

By Heather Kathrens | Returned Peace Corps Volunteer

Dear supporters and friends,

Sorry for the delay in reporting! This report is coming from Heather Kathrens, the Peace Corps Volunteer who was posted with Nkong Hill Top. Since our last report, I have finished my service with the Peace Corps and moved back the the U.S. I have been getting settled into life there again and regret not getting this report out sooner! As I am continuing my education and enter graduate school in the US, I will obviously be less involved with the pig project. Have no fear though! Miss Erica Johnson is my replacement at Nkong Hill Top and will do her best to provide support to the team. And of course, we still have our crucial team members Aldous, Ngoasong and Imelda taking care of things on the ground. As we transition, the future reports will likely not be from me, but I will be providing some support from the background. We look forward to continuing projects in Ikata and hopefully moving into other areas close in proximity to Ikata.

With that said, I must sadly inform you of the recent pig famine that moved through the Ikata region. The famine got all but two of the pigs. Nkong is regrouping to see what they could have done different, but when this type of sickness moves through an area, there is not much that can be done. The women who lost their pigs are very sad and Nkong is helping them think about moving forward. The pens are still in place, so not all is lost--and now it is just a matter of restocking.

Just a reminder of how much we apreciate you and your support for this project and for taking an interest in something so worthwhile and needed. Please continue to check in with us and to tell your friends about Nkong Hill Top!

As the holidays approach us, we are wishing you all warmth and happiness and that you are surrounded by those you cherish.

Yours in service,

Heather Kathrens and the Nkong Hill Top Team
