Youth-led Digital Mapping - Morocco, US & Brazil

By Zayn Abaakil | President

Last July, the Dounia Project president went to San Diego for the annual ESRI User Conference with a focus on Digital Mapping in Education. After days of networking, hands-on technical training, discussions around best practices on the youth engagement field, she came back to New York with: potential partners from Brazil and the US, plenty of materials to include in the curriculum, and an agreement to purchase data collection and digital mapping software at a lower price.
Throughout the summer, the Dounia Project team revamped the curriculum by adding new elements and approches to youth-led digital mapping. We contacted potential partners and started initial discussions with a high school in Minas Gerais (Brazil) and another one in Philadelphia.
Currently the Dounia Project president is in Morocco meeting with potential high schools and trainers to be part of the first youth mapping global exchange program with the schools in the US and Brazil.
Finally, the Dounia Project team is testing the different tools made available by ESRI and assessing how they could best be used by our participants in the three locations, taking into account low internet connectivity and access to new and updated equipment.
We have a busy fall, so please stay tuned and we will let you know about our progress.
