Dounia Project participants in Casablanca applied their event planning and implementation skills by organizing a wonderful community event in a notorious art public space to celebrate International Youth Day on August 12, 2012.

Students invited friends and family to celebrate the end of the program year. The event started with a celebration of the holy month of Ramadan with a delicious meal prepared by Dounia Project volunteers to break the fast, followed by a screening of students’ videos on different themes but under the umbrella of Social Justice. The event ended with a dance party animated by a DJ. Participants had the opportunity to meet different artists, members of academia, local business owners, and community activists in order to extend their network on the local level.

Participants came back in October for a new year of Dounia Project programming. This school year, youth in Casablanca, Morocco and the Bronx and Brooklyn, NY will be connecting to tackle different human rights issues affecting their own communities as well as the global community at large. We will focus the program on exploring different human rights abuses by interviewing members of the community and dressing video portraits following a relevant guide to action for positive community change. Youth will enhance their video skills through weekly workshops on video production and media literacy. Throughout the year, youth will work collaboratively with their counterparts in other locations to develop projects linking local to global issues and raising awareness about these problems within their respective communities.

Participants in Rio de Janeiro are selected and will join the program in March 2013. A significant need assessment was conducted in the school, the neighborhood and with local organizations. Thanks to donations during the Global Giving Challenge, we were able to hire a very talented local coordinator/facilitator who is currently being trained via webinars led by the global coordination team in New York City.
