“The financial support generously provided by Better Days has been a game-changer for me academically. It has relieved the burden of financial stress, allowing me to focus wholeheartedly on my studies and pursue extracurricular opportunities that enhance my learning experience. Thanks to Better Days, I have been able to access necessary resources, invest in educational materials, and participate in enriching academic activities that have positively impacted my educational journey.” - ‘O’, age 20, Sierra Leone
‘O’ is a second-year university student studying Computer Science. This year, he is learning about cyber networking and how to implement advanced coding concepts. In addition to his studies, ‘O’ is a member of the football team and was recently inducted into the university honours program.
‘O’ is also a recipient of the Gekko Studentship, a programme that covers essential living expenses for young adults affected by displacement who are pursuing advanced education or vocational training. Better Days is currently sponsoring Studentships for 10 18-24-year-olds working towards independent, dignified futures.
Gekko Studentships aim to reduce critical gaps in access to higher education for students affected by displacement. According to data from UNHCR, only 6 per cent of refugees were enrolled in higher education in 2022. Higher education opens doors to new perspectives, expanded opportunities, and gainful employment, preparing students to become leaders in their communities. Demand for Studentships is high, we receive new referrals every month. With the help of supporters like you, we hope to significantly expand the capacity of Gekko Studentships next academic year.
Studentships complement our day-to-day efforts, providing personalised education and public school support for displaced students ages 15-24 at Gekko in Athens. As of January, 91 students have accessed classes and services at Gekko. We continue to receive positive feedback and are motivated every day by students’ resiliency and determination to succeed.
As always, we are grateful for your generous contributions to our work. With your support, we remain committed to offering stable, quality services responsive to the needs of individual students. Thank you!
