Dear Supporters,
Grow Against Poverty’s Pedal Power for Kenyan Education has distributed more than 800 Buffalo Bicycles to high schools over the last 7 years. While there are organizations that give bicycles to students, we did not know of a program that gave the bicycles to the schools which then issued them to students for the school year. Why did we decide on this? There are several reasons.
Buffalo Bicycles are heavy-duty, well-made machines, but even they need maintenance and occasional repairs. The students who use the bicycles come from very poor families who may not be able to afford this upkeep. In our program, bicycles are called in each year for maintenance checks and parts are replaced as needed.
Once issued a bicycle, students must display good attendance, attitude and academics to keep using it. As the number of bicycles given to each school is less than the number of students requesting them, there is a waiting list in case a student loses their bicycle privilege.
Bicycles are passed on when students graduate. Most of the Buffalo Bicycles from the first years of the program are still on the road. They have been ridden by multiple students for thousands of miles on rough roads.
Each student is grateful for the opportunity to have been a part of this program. More than 400 direct beneficiaries of your donations to Pedal Power for Kenyan Education have successfully completed their secondary school education and are pursuing different courses in Kenyan Universities or colleges and will soon be graduating.
Please keep supporting Pedal Power for Kenyan Education with a donation today.
