Restore impacted protected forest in Puerto Rico

Protectores de Cuencas Inc., is using donated funds to cover costs related to the production of native trees and maintenance of previously reforested areas inside the Guánica State Forest in Puerto Rico. This natural reserve is frequently subjected to wildland fires and is greatly benefiting from this reforestation project.

This report covers the period from June 2023 to September 2023. During this period, our team focused on  maintenance of weeds and grasses. This year has been particularly rainy and grasses can quickly surpass tree height if not maintaned. Maintenance work included the removal of invasive species and the replacement of dead trees. September is the peak of hurricane season in Puerto Rico hence reforestation efforts will resume in October. Meanwhile, our team will keep up maintenance efforts to keep up with growing grasses.

This report covers the period from February 2023 to May 2023. From February to March, our team focused on irrigation efforts and maintenance of weeds and grasses to reduce fire risk in the previously planted areas. Maintenance work included the removal of invasive species and the replacement of dead trees. From April to May, the team compled the planting of trees using species such as lija (Cordia rickseckeri), úcar (Bucida buceras), mabí (Colubrina elliptica), among others that were propagated in PDCs nursery in Yauco. Work during the next few months will be focused on irrigation and maintenance efforts of newly planted trees as the temperatures rise in the upcoming months.
