Summary

For girls in Kabul, adolescence is a closing door. Once girls age out of school after grade 6, they have few choices, and their risk for early marriage, human trafficking, and exploitation rise. Pathways for Afghan Girls exists to hold open that door for them. Teen girls learn vocational and literacy skills with psychosocial care, family engagement, and mentorship. The goal is for each girl, growing up in one of the hardest places on earth, to have the chance to live freely and with dignity.

Challenge

In Afghanistan, girls age out of school after grade six due to government restrictions. With few opportunities for education and skills training, many girls are at risk for early marriage, human trafficking, and exploitation. Existing programs help in pieces: training without income prep, livelihood work built for adult women, counseling disconnected from learning. Without an integrated path, a girl may gain a skill but return to a home where early marriage still looks like the safest choice.

Solution

Pathways for Afghan Girls creates a bridge for girls between school and adult life. It starts with safety: assessment, family engagement, and safe transport. Girls then build literacy, numeracy, and vocational skills alongside trauma-informed psychosocial care. Graduates receive a business start-up kit and mentoring from Hagar's livelihoods program, so training leads to real, safe income, and pathways for opportunity and freedom that break the cycle of exploitation and child marriage.

Long-Term Impact

Over the next three years, 150 girls will access this crucial bridge program in Kabul. With additional funding, hundreds more girls can receive the training, education, and counseling they need to create a better future for themselves and their families.
