Eliminating Water Borne Diseases in Western Honduras

By Tom Carter | Executive Director

Dear Friends and Supporters-

Anna Maria lives in a small community in a mountainous region of Western Honduras.  She is a strong advocate for her family and for her neighbors, promoting good health and nutrition.  She has a small community pharmacy in her home, stocked with over the counter medicines and other meds prescribed by health workers for local residents to be taken as directed.  Local aid agencies have trained her to take blood pressures, and test for anemias in children.
Agua Pura trained Anna Maria and other pharmacy managers to test local drinking water sources for contamination and how to purify the water.  Now, through her pharmacy she offers water testing and provides Water Purification Indicators for sale.
Water Purification Indicators (WAPIs) are a simple inexpensive device that shows when water is pasteurized and safe to drink.  They can be reused thousands of times and water heated to pasteurization is completely effective in killing harmful bacteria and other organisms that cause diarrhea in children and adults.  Over a million children world wide die every year from diarrhea, a preventable disease.
Agua Pura is working with Anna Maria and our Honduran partners to stop water-borne disease in children in Western Honduras. There are over six thousand families with children under six years of age and our goal is to provide a WAPI to every one of them and train them in its use. Through Anna Maria and the other pharmacies we believe we can reach that goal.
A team of our volunteers just returned from Honduras where they brought special equipment and supplies to make high quality WAPIs there, rather than import them from the U.S.  They trained local organizations to make the WAPIs and they left enough supplies to make 1500 WAPIs and we sent 500 more. Eventually the local staff will be able to make these life saving devices for all of Honduras and Latin America.

Our staff has accepted the challenge to eliminate diarrhea in the children of the area, and with your continued support, we will meet that challenge as well as others. In your year-end charitable giving will you consider supporting Anna Maria and Agua Pura in our shared goal to protect thousands of young children and their families from this deadly disease?

p.s. Would you like a Water Pasteurization Indicator for yourself?  You can see how they work and how they can save lives.  Just write me at tom@aguapuraparaelpueblo.org and I'll send you one.
