Having fun at PALE

In this newsletter, I thought we'd share with you the larger program within which Pass the Mic is embedded. This is the PALE program for Sunflower Fellows. (Pathways Pathways to Alternative Learning and Education). It is leadership academy, dedicated to ensuring that all girls get the opportunity to succeed. After successful completion of the four-year fellowship, our Sunflower fellows are matched with sponsors and placed in secondary schools, or internships throughout Nairobi, putting them on the path to tertiary education.

At Sunflower, we measure the potential to be a leader not through academic achievement, but through personal character, curiosity and willingness to learn. Our LEAD principles (Love, Education, Action and Discipline) are the core philosophy of our program and our community involvement, and determining who are fellows will be. Through our fellowship program, we mentor, protect and empower these young women to leadership roles, in any way, shape or form that is best for them. Through our unique selection process of our fellows, we ensure that girls with no chance of being sponsored by another organization can continue their education and create something valuable with their lives.

These Fellows have a safe place to do their homework with support, they participate in basic maths and literacy classes and the Pass the Mic. program that furthers their literacy skills whilst introducing them to technology and the art lab. The final outcome is the production of magazines, stories and graphic novels by the students. The impact is not restricted to the participants. The books the produce will be provided to families and schools in Kibera, where a book is a luxury. These students mentor others at a monthly open literacy group for a further 30 girls from all over Kibera. They are not simply becoming leaders, but providing other girls with the very possiblity of female leadership.
