"Pasos de Esperanza" seeks to restore mobility and independence to 50 patients in La Guaira, Venezuela, who lost a limb during the earthquake. The program is designed to assist 25 children (focusing on their growth and school development) and 25 adults (focusing on their independence in work and family life) by providing pre-prosthetic physical therapy, high-quality custom prostheses, and comprehensive rehabilitation support.
The loss of a limb has a devastating and distinct impact depending on the stage of life: a child without a prosthesis faces isolation from play activities-which are vital for cognitive and social development-as well as secondary bone deformities resulting from attempts to compensate for the missing limb. For an adult, amputation often means the immediate loss of employment, plunging the entire family into poverty and triggering depression.
Our methodology addresses the specific anatomical, psychological, and social needs of each age group through three phases: 1- Pre-prosthetic conditioning: residual limb preparation, psychological support, and occupational therapy. 2- Prosthetic design and fitting: prostheses with adjustable modular and mechanical systems that can "grow" with the child, and robust, durable prostheses for adults. 3- Training and reintegration (post-prosthetic): development of motor skills.
With your support we will achieve: Objective 1: Rehabilitate and equip 25 boys and girls, guaranteeing their permanence in the school system and their right to play actively. Objective 2: Provide prosthetics and job training to 25 adults, allowing them to recover their role as economic providers for their homes. Objective 3: Provide more than 200 combined sessions of physical therapy, occupational therapy and mental health.
