Shabana's Journey to Lead Her Community

By Azra Maqsood | Country Director

Shabana, conquering mountains
Shabana, conquering mountains

Shabana, and young women like her in Gilgit-Baltistan (Pakistan) are trying to create powerful, generational change --- not just learning skills --- they are becoming leaders and inspirations in their communities.

Before joining the Ascend Pakistan program, Shabana saw limited paths forward. Like many women in her region, economic opportunities were scarce, and societal expectations often dictated the boundaries of her ambitions. "I was in a constant state of doubt," she recalls.

Her narrative changed. Shabana enrolled in Ascend Pakistan’s comprehensive training, a program designed to equip women with the professional, digital, and personal development tools to build sustainable livelihoods. The Ascend intervention, through the rigorous leadership training, enabled a transformation.

  • From Doubt to Professional Skill: "I learned to communicate, present myself, and use digital tools," Shabana says. She moved from uncertainty to mastering concrete skills for the modern workplace.
  • The Unlocking of Confidence: The most profound change was internal. "This training shook my soul and revived my self-esteem," she shares. Now, she asserts her opinions confidently, a direct positive behavior change fostered by the program.
  • A Ripple Effect of Ambition: Shabana’s vision has expanded beyond herself. Inspired by the women trained alongside her, she now states, "Let me be the example." Her goal is to manage a project and mentor others, demonstrating how your support creates a multiplier effect.

Shabana’s climb is a testament to what is possible. Ascend is not only training; it helps unlock a woman’s potential to shape her own future and lift up her community. This is the lasting impact we aim to achieve.
