Project Report
Need Assesment of the Area
The spell of monsoon rains that started in the second week of August 2011 has triggered serious flooding affecting more than 5 million population, the majority of which lives in Sindh province and affecting some populations in Balochistan. According to government and UN sources, some 22 out of 23 districts of Sindh province have been affected. To date, there are 218 confirmed deaths, and nearly 300,000 people are displaced and living under open sky and in tents. Furthermore, it is reported to have destroyed or damaged nearly one million houses, and flooded 4.2 million acres of land, prompting the Government of Pakistan to call for support from the United Nations.
The death toll increased after floodwaters receded in some areas, although specific number of deaths directly attributable to flooding is difficult to ascertain. Lost shelter and food staples, limited access to clean water, and unsanitary conditions from standing water and submerged lands are immediate humanitarian issues. Cases of malnutrition, gastroenteritis, diarrhea, skin infections, cholera, typhoid, malaria, and hepatitis have been reported.
