Land Grabbing?

By Lena Gilbert | Founder and Project Leader

Mark outside with neighborhood dog

I just got an email yesterday from our Auntie Grace reporting on suspicious activity surrounding our land. It is common for land that is sitting around with nothing on it to be snatched up or taken back by the owner at a lower price. We had been growing food to feed the children, but then the drought hit and things stopped growing. So now it sits vacant, until we are ready to build! That is where you come in!

This is the year! People are showing more of an interest in this wonderful piece of land, so we have to act now! PLease work with us to make this happen!!!

How much will it cost?? Just some estimates....

Building one hut on the land = $2547

            Building a latrine = $1649

Building a covered cooking hut = $418

As you can see-- every little bit counts! We need to work together to build on the land-- to finally provide the children with a  place to call home. They need the security and comfort of knowing it is theirs... it is their HOME!

Read what Mark has to say about why he loves being at HOME on the weeekends so much:

“Our Saturdays are always our best days at home, because we wake up at least 2 hrs later than we normally do on school days. On school days we wake up at 5.30 am and take about 1hr preparing ,this includes bathing, brushing our teeth and breakfast is served at 6.30, we then leave immediately for school after that, we have about 1and half kilometers to walk , but on a Saturday like today, we do wake up at around 8 am we then do a bit of house work, like sweeping the compound , we then have breakfast at 9.30 am , we are then free to play football or any other games as we please, it is only at 1.00p when we are called in for our lunch, after lunch it is a mixture of many things , according to our wish, we can join friends at the main play ground in the neighborhood or just continue with our different games from home . We then have our evening bath at 6 pm and supper served at 7.30 pm , we then have sometime playing indoor games or doing our homework till 9.30 p when we get to bed.”

Since playmates and peers are often those around you in the village, moving around and renting houses does not allow the children to be able to build on those relationships that they make. Work with us and help us provide for the children like Mark a safe and secure FOREVER home! A place that he can connect with other young people in his community without the threat that he may have to move. What an amazing gift!

It is so easy to partner with us to provide opportunity, love and safety for such amazing young people in Uganda. Share just a little bit of YOU and someones' life can be changed forever!!

Warmly,

Lena and the WOC team
