Over the past few months, the Diques Program has continued to be a safe, empowering space for over 110 children from the marginalized Los Diques community. With the help of dedicated volunteers and staff, we provided tutoring, emotional support, recreational activities and others, throughout the week. Many of the children face learning delays and unstable home environments, and the consistency and care they receive at Lifting Hands makes a tangible difference. This period, students improved their reading skills, and teachers at local schools have reported better classroom behavior and participation.
One mother, Carolina, shared, “Before, my daughter was very shy and struggled in school. Now she’s reading on her own and looks forward to her days at Lifting Hands. It’s like a second home.” Another student, 11-year-old Luis, who was initially disruptive in sessions, has begun helping younger peers with their homework. His transformation is a testament to what’s possible when children are given trust, structure, and encouragement. Our emotional intelligence sessions and creative activities like art therapy have been especially impactful in helping kids open up, process emotions, and build resilience.
