Like many children growing up in remote rural communities, Deepak had never had access to a hearing assessment.
During a recent visit to Karnataka, we accompanied three children from our programme for their first-ever audiology assessments. While speaking with one of the mothers, she shared something I will never forget: "We never knew our child could hear with the help of a hearing aid. We didn't even know such a thing existed." Living in a remote village, the family had never met an audiologist or heard about hearing assessments. They simply believed nothing could be done. Deepak was one of those children.
Deepak, 17, comes from one of Karnataka's Aspirational Districts and a highly marginalised community. Having lost his mother at a young age, he was raised by his extended family. Hearing impairment affects several members of his family, but until OSCAR's intervention, they had never realised that support was available.
Through your support, Deepak received his first hearing assessment and hearing aid. Combined with OSCAR's football and life skills programme, this transformed his confidence and outlook. Today, he attends school regularly, communicates with greater ease, helps his family, and has become a positive role model in his community.
For Deepak, the greatest gift was not just the ability to hear more clearly, it was the chance to believe in himself and his future.
Thank you to our GlobalGiving and UK donors for making stories like Deepak's possible.
