Afreen's Journey of Confidence and Leadership

By Sunita Rathod | Fundraising Manager

Afreen, a 14-year-old with hearing and speech impairments from OSCAR Enabling Change Project, has experienced personal growth since joining OSCAR Foundation programme four years ago. Before participating, she was shy and hesitant to interact with others. Today, Afreen is a confident individual who communicates effectively using hand gestures and sign language, demonstrating leadership and problem-solving skills both on and off the field. Football became her gateway to overcoming initial discomfort, with the support of empathetic coaches and friends who encouraged her to connect and thrive. OSCAR’s life skills sessions have enhanced her decision-making, self-awareness and adaptability, enabling her to address challenges at home and in the community.

Despite occasional communication barriers during sessions, Afreen has learned to seek support and find creative ways to understand drills, often with help from her peers. Beyond football, she enjoys playing badminton and kho kho and aspires to become a makeup artist in the future. Her parents are deeply grateful for OSCAR’s free football sessions, which provide children like Afreen with opportunities for learning and personal development. They note her excitement each week as she eagerly shares her experiences from the programme. Afreen’s journey highlights the transformative impact of OSCAR’s holistic approach, promoting confidence, resilience and aspirations in children through football and life skills education.
